Infosys has initiated the mega search for a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The nominations committee is scanning external and internal candidates, undertaking a monumental search. This search also has wider implications for the Indian corporate beyond the usual hiring. According to sources close to the matter, the Infosys Alumni, working already as top executives globally are likely to fill the important vacant position. Usually, candidates for top positions are hired from outside, but Infosys could just break away from the long road taken by many.
Nandan Nilekani, the newly elected chairman of Infosys has talked about the qualities that would define an ideal candidate. He has also specifically mentioned Infosys alumni as a great resource for the top hiring. In all likelihood, top executives with a wide range of experience and working knowledge of the Infosys culture would find it easier to fill the big empty shoes.
However, not all industry experts agree that the new CEO is most likely to be an insider. Some experts feel that the talent pool within Infosys is quite limited and hence Infosys would have to look elsewhere to hire a new CEO. Nevertheless, among the internal candidates, interim CEO Pravin Rao, Deputy COO Ravi Kumar and Presidents – Mohit Joshi and Rajesh Krishnamurthy are strong contenders for the lucrative top position.
Infosys is likely to bring in a CEO who has a strong technology and business acumen. Similarly, they would likely to avoid someone with a high public profile like their previous CEO, Vishal Sikka. The company has recently taken a dip plunge in shares due to the recent episode with Vishal Sikka. Additionally, many top executives also had quit Infosys during the tenure of Sikka. Hence, the mega search is wandering in exciting and challenging woods, maybe to unravel a new chapter in the Indian corporate history.
