Driven by gains in the final hour of trade on Wednesday, benchmark indices ended on a very strong note, with the Nifty closing above 9850-mark.
The Sensex closed up 276.16 points at 31568.01, while the Nifty was up 86.95 points at 9852.50. The market breadth was positive as 1,607 shares advanced against a decline of 968 shares, while 137 shares were unchanged.
Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel and Indiabulls Housing gained the most on both indices, while HUL, Sun Pharma, Tech Mahindra and Tata Power were the top losers.
Smallcaps and midcaps outperformed the market, with the Nifty midcap index ending over a percent higher.
